Why do I need Sanitary Disposal Services?

If your company has any female employees, or if women from other companies visit your premises, in many cases you can break employment law, environmental law or health and safety law without even knowing it. There are several pieces of legislation that mean that as a business or an organisation providing toilets for public or employee use, you have a duty to ensure that provisions are in place for the correct disposal of sanitary waste.

The Environment Protection Act 1990

This act places a legal "duty of care" upon you and your organisation to ensure that all waste produced on your premises is correctly managed up to the point of final disposal. You must take all reasonable steps to ensure that:

• Your waste disposal contractors are registered waste carriers

• Final disposal is carried out according to legal requirements, and at a licensed landfill or incineration facility

Waste must be carried by a licensed carrier and a full audit trail of documentation must be available at all times. Failure to comply can lead to a large fine or a term of imprisonment. This applies to all commercial premises, even if only one female is employed. This regulation is further endorsed by the Water Industries Act 1991, which  clearly states:

Water Industries Act 1991

No items should be flushed that could cause a blockage within a drain or sewer.

As well as public drains your own drains could be very expensive to repair

The approved code of practice for Regulation 21 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, advises that:

  • Sanitary Disposal -"in the case of water closets (cubicles) used by women, suitable means should be provided for the disposal of sanitary dressings".  This includes disabled bathrooms / cubicles.

  • Washing Facilities - "Washing facilities...must include towels or other suitable means of drying".Warm Air Dryers & Paper Dispensers-

  • Toilet Roll Holders- "toilet paper in a holder or dispenser...should be provided".

  • Soap Dispensers- "Washing facilities...must include soap or other suitable means of cleaning".

  • Air Freshening"Effective and suitable provision shall be made to ensure that every enclosed workplace is ventilated by a sufficient quantity of fresh or purified air"    and suitable   "means should be taken to prevent odours from lingering in and from entering into other rooms"

At Diamond Hygiene, we can talk you through all of these, assessing your current provisions and offer guidance and solutions to any issues that you may have.
